When you hear the word “action”, you may picture an old school side scrolling shooter. The genre is not completely dead, however. Door Kickers: Action Squad (OK, its actually called Action Squad, but you get the idea) is a modern take on the original, but with a few tweaks. For example, instead of using the standard mouse to control your crew of SWAT spies, you can use the left and right arrows on your keyboard, or even a remote control.
In the spirit of “less is more,” the developers at Pixelshard and KillHouse Games have managed to deliver an action-packed experience for a reasonable price. The game offers a number of missions, each of which has its own unique flair. You can opt to go solo or team up with up to three other players. Depending on your skill set, you can go for the kill or just take your time navigating the level. If you choose to go all out, the co-op mode is sure to prove an enjoyable challenge.
The game isn’t without its flaws, but these can be minimized by choosing your opponents wisely. Aside from the standard zombies, you’ll also find a handful of other types of apocalyptic creatures, ranging from ethereal creatures to ghouls to voodoo dolls. Luckily, the bad guys aren’t always as threatening as they seem. And you’ll definitely want to beware of any of the booby-traps that lurk on your travels. Despite its flaws, this game is a fun little romp. It’s not as challenging as the original, but it is still a bit on the difficult side. Likewise, it’s easy to get into a rut. Luckily, the game’s optional co-op mode can help get you back on your feet.
Among the game’s many features, one of the most impressive is its online multiplayer. As the name suggests, players can take on the role of a fictional government agent in Nowhere City, USA. Having a partner by your side allows you to take your game to the next level and give you the upper hand when you’re battling swarms of zombies and aliens. Other than this, you’ll also have the option of playing in local or online co-op.
While the name of the game might elicit a chuckle, the game certainly lives up to its billing. The main draw is the game’s retro-style graphics, which are particularly nice in this context. Moreover, the game has a surprisingly large number of levels to explore. These are not all designed to be played in a single go, so you’ll find yourself replaying certain missions repeatedly, which is a good thing. This is especially true of the aforementioned zombie levels.
Despite its shortcomings, Door Kickers: Action Squad is a solid little shooter that will keep you occupied for hours on end. It’s not quite the next big thing, but it certainly is the best of the bunch.
