ZEvent, the annual charity event for the biggest French streamers, raised more than 10 million euros in one weekend for the NGO Action Against Hunger, almost double what it had collected in 2020.
“We only do entertainment,” explains Alexandre Dachary, co-founder of the event, with Montpellier streamer ZeratoR. “The technical teams and the creators are fully involved and everyone understands the codes better and better. This is undoubtedly what explains this success.”
From Friday evening until Sunday late night, around fifty streamers were gathered at the Palais des Congrès in La Grande Motte (Hérault). At the end of a 50-hour marathon of streaming broadcast live on the Twitch platform, the participants smashed their record from last year: in 2020, they had raised just over five million euros for the benefit of Amnesty International.
Originally presented as an event bringing together video game streamers, the ZEvent has become a real show with still video games but also animations, quizzes … This year, for example, the host of “Questions for a champion “Samuel Étienne, who has been on Twitch himself for a few months, has come to host a variant of his game with the streamer Etoiles.
For 50 hours, streamers gave of their own to encourage viewers to donate. Thus, each participant generally sets a list of “donation goals”, challenges that he undertakes to honor for each level crossed in his personal pot. Shave your head to paint a Kinder surprise, stand for the presidential election, get a tattoo, go to the United States to test the weapons used in a game … So many promises which, in addition to the guaranteed spectacle for 50 hours, serve to motivate spectators to give.
This year, “the choice of the Action Contre la Faim association is justified by common values with our organization, but also because it is a large-scale association, capable of managing large amounts. It is also known to the public. middle and high school students, our audience “, specifies Alexandre Dachary.
At the end of the marathon, the organizers posted this message on their Twitter account: “It’s historic, you are historic!”, before making an appointment for the 2022 edition.
Since its creation, each year, the ZEvent has broken its donation record. In 2017, € 451,851 was collected for the Red Cross. In 2018, € 1,094,731 was donated to Médecins sans frontières. In 2019, the Institut Pasteur received € 3,509,878 and last year, € 5,724,377 were raised for Amnesty International.
