When Rita Wilson was a teenager, she would sing in a folk group. She attended a high school in Los Angeles and was interested in acting. Upon graduation, she joined the Groundlings Theatre & School. From there, she went on to make numerous appearances on television. In her early career, she made guest appearances on shows such as The Brady Bunch and Volunteers. However, she was not able to secure a substantial role until she was in her mid-twenties.
While working on her first film, she met actor Tom Hanks. They became married in 1988. Since then, the couple has been together and have two sons. Their son, Truman, has a small role in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Rita Wilson has been active for women’s cancers for many years. Her activism was inspired by Rosie O’Donnell. She has donated jewelry to the Moffitt Cancer Center. In 2016, she was featured on a stamp from the Greek Postal Service ELTA. Additionally, Wilson is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. Aside from her acting and singing talents, she is also a successful writer and producer.
As she grew up, Rita Wilson was inspired by the courage of her parents. Her mother, Dorothea Tzigkou, was of Greek and Bulgarian descent. Both her parents moved to the United States when she was young, and raised her in Greek Orthodox faith.
Her father, Hassan Halilov Ibrahimoff, was a Bulgarian Muslim who later converted to Orthodox Christianity. He was born in the village of Orzio, in Greece. Although he speaks a little bit of Italian, he fluently spoke Russian and Greek. His name was later changed to Allan Wilson.
Rita Wilson’s first film, The Day It Came to Earth, was a science-fiction horror film. It was distributed by Howco and was released to drive-in theaters. During its run, it was one of several B-Movies distributed by Howco.
In the 1980s, Rita Wilson appeared on a number of television shows, including Teen Witch and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She also appeared in the comedy film Runaway Bride. Later, she was cast in the Broadway revival of the musical Chicago. She was nominated for an Orpheus Award for Best Short Film at the 2008 Los Angeles Greek Film Festival.
Before retiring from acting, Rita Wilson was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019. She has also been given an award by the National Board of Review for her contribution to “It’s Complicated.” She is the producer of the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
Despite her acting and writing careers, Rita Wilson has always been a philanthropist. She and her husband have been involved in donating blood antibodies to help in the fight against AIDS and other diseases. For this, they donated “True Hearts” jewelry to the Moffitt Cancer Center. After the Mati wildfire in Greece in 2015, she was a vocal advocate for international aid. During her time in Australia, she and her husband had a minor illness. They were later admitted to Gold Coast University Hospital.
